If your speaking business hasn't grown as fast as you hoped this year (or at all), might it be because you kept changing the plan?
Focus means saying no to something that, with every bone in your body, you think is a phenomenal idea.
I don't know about you, but as this year has progressed, I've found it increasingly hard to focus.
There are shiny objects dangling everywhere with the potential to 'change everything.'
🍭 Awards | 🍭 Showreels | 🍭 TEDx talks
🍭 Book deals | 🍭 Signature talks | 🍭 Speaker bureaus | 🍭 New offers
I'm not saying these aren't valuable. Most of them are.
But they work best as part of a clear strategy, not a substitute for one.
I've spoken to a few people recently who feel like "they've tried everything and nothing's worked."
And I can't help but think maybe that's the problem.
Most of the things that actually grow a speaking business are unsexy and repetitive.
🥦 Showing up on socials | 🥦 Writing a weekly newsletter | 🥦 Running your own events
🥦 Collecting testimonials | 🥦 Speaking for free | 🥦 Pitching tiny podcasts
♻️ Reps, basically.
These reps feel f****** thankless. And our egos fight them every step of the way.
Until one day, it all pays off 🚀
We're all very good at starting things, but often what separates those who make it from those who don't is focus.
One they've stuck with long enough to see the payoff.
Inside MicDrop this month, we're dedicating November to helping our members get clear on and commit to a focus. Something they'll go 'all in' on for the next 12 months.
Then we'll match them with others doing the same, because it's a hell of a lot easier when you're not doing the reps alone.
Most people wait until December or January to get clear on this stuff, which I think is a mistake. It takes time to emotionally commit to something like this and deciding this month, gives us the opportunity of a head start.
Which begs a question…
It’s December 2027. You’re reflecting on your journey over the last 12 months.
What will your future self thank you for?
Your answer is a single word added to the end of this sentence:
“For the next 12 months, I’m going all in on...”
Mine is video 🍿.
What’s yours?
Alex
