๐Ÿค” 'How the hell did they land that?!'

Here's the answer.

Weโ€™ve all stumbled across a celebratory announcement post from a peer and quietly thought to ourselves:

โ€œHow the hell did they land that?!โ€

Itโ€™s been my job to ask this question for the past 5 years.

When I started. I expected was to get answers back like:

  1. "I crafted a signature talk...

  2. "I pitched it to event organisers...

  3. โ€œI got on agents and bureaus books...

  4. "I added 'Speaker' to my LinkedIn profile...

... and the opportunities just came rolling in ๐Ÿงฒ."

If ONLY it was this straight forward!

Contrary to what most of the 'get booked to speak gurus' will tell you, that's not how this game works.

That the most common answer I get back (and it's not even close):
"๐—œ ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ."

So wonderfully simple, but there's a catch.

To be worth talking about, you need:

Messaging and positioning matter. People can only recommend what they can describe.

A clear POV. And quirks - lean into those. So that your topic comes up, it's your name that follows.

The kind that comes from years of doing. Speaking. Writing. Results. Research. This is your body of work.

These are the foundations that everyone focuses on, but you canโ€™t do any of it without:

You need to be surrounded by the right people, in the right rooms. That's what tips the scale.

We don't get far alone.

The Speaker Snapshot

When a member joins, the very first thing we do is help them get the fundamentals in place.

On the wheel thatโ€™s the Messaging ๐Ÿ’ฌ, Positioning ๐Ÿงฉ and Attract ๐Ÿงฒ.

Our happiest members (the ones getting outsized results) get the foundations in place (a few hours work) and then dip in and out when they need, prioritising the one or two things a month that will have an outsized impact on their goals. That might be:

  1. Attending one of our virtual sessions
A chance to learn/practice/connect with other members

This is what a typical month looks like.

  1. Contributing in the hub ๐Ÿ’ฌ
To a member question or asking for help when something urgentโ€™s comes up.

  2. Plotting and implementing their next big move ๐Ÿš€
With members at the same stage/goal as them.

Last week, I woke up to find out that two MicDroppers had landed TEDx talks because another member had put their names forward.

It's a perfect example of what happens when you invest in the right relationships.

Iโ€™ve had a lot of conversations with prospective members over the last few days. Most (if they're being honest) join for the foundations, but they stay for the people.

On March 3rd we'll be welcoming a very small intake of new members. At the time of writing, we have 7 spaces left.

Over the next few days, Iโ€™m holding 15-minute calls with prospective members.

Happy Friday.
