🧲 Win back your audience's attention with these 7 magic words...

This one's for the ramblers, the wafflers and the over-explainers... 🤐

We've all found ourselves presenting to a room of vacant stares at some point! The next time that happens, say these 7 magic words…

So, why am I telling you this?

Followed by a pause and a power statement

It doesn’t matter how experienced a presenter you are, losing our audience from time to time comes with the territory. What separates the good from the great is:

  1. How quickly they notice ⚡️

  2. What they choose to do about it 🛠️

The reason those 7 magic words work is because they force a pattern break. They disrupt the rhythm of the presentation so that the audience sits up and takes notice.

The pause then creates anticipation for what you’re about to say… before you sum up your point in a sentence with a power statement.

If you have an idea that you genuinely think is good, don't let some idiot talk you out of it!

Stan Lee, UCLA Commencement Speech, 2017

Stan Lee, the creator of Spiderman used this technique when he addressed UCLA’s class of 2017.

It went down a treat.

He had the whole room in the palm of his hand even though he was delivering the presentation sitting from a chair!

The best bit about this technique is that you don’t have to wait until your audience is disengaged to be able to use it. It’s even more effective when used proactively.

So, whether you're delivering a keynote address, pitching a project or leading a meeting, remember: 'So, why am I telling you this?' Pause. Power statement.
