🧩 The Missing Ingredient in Your Personal Brand Strategy
Ft Professor Martin Seligman
Martin Seligman’s thought leadership strategy has been adopted by the likes of Malcolm Gladwell, Susan Caine and Azeem Azhar.
And it starts with something deceptively simple:
Owning a phrase.
Martin’s phrase? Positive Psychology.
It works because it’s:
Specific 🎯,
Relatable 💡,
Recommendable 🧠
… which is important because you’re not going to be able to spread the word without your audience’s help.
Now, you can’t go anywhere on the internet without seeing Martin’s name with that phrase. Including his TED talk, ‘A new era of Positive Psychology.’
The strategy…
I share this, because every successful thought leader of the last decade has a word or phrase they have built their personal brand around.
Brene Brown → Vulnerability
Simon Sinek → Start with Why
Azeen Azhar → Exponential age
It’s a strategy being used by MicDrop members too…
Alice Driscoll and Louise van Haarst → Smart Conflict
Mostyn Wilson → Atomic Ambition
Athena Peppes → AI Literacy
Nick Jemetta → Superhuman teams
Jodie Jackson → Media Impact
Mark Leruste → Personal Storytelling
Leila Green → Mum Guilt
Alexander Bell → Attention Intelligence
Mira Magecha → Trust
Notice how they’re all a level deeper than the field they’re in? The goal is to pin something down that’s:
Specific enough to create a sense of specialism,
Relatable enough for your audience to be able to adopt it.
Inside MicDrop, becoming synonymous with a word or phrase is a super smart strategy - because when speaking opportunities get shared, members know exactly who to call.
It’s like having a team of champions with their ear to the ground for you. And when the right one shows up, your name is the one that comes to mind.
It’s why one of the first things we’ll be helping our new members do is pin down an answer to this question…
So what’s the word or phrase you’re building your personal brand around?
If you don’t have one yet, consider this your sign to start today.

MicDrop, my public speaking community for tomorrow’s thought leaders will be opening it’s doors to new members in May.
I’ll be launching the intake publicly next week, if the last launch was anything to go by, it’s going to get crazy!
Over half of our places have already gone, so if you’ve been thinking about joining, now is the time to book in a call.
