and makes your message more memorable 👌

The Rule of 3

There’s a reason why there are three blind mice, three musketeers and three bears (poor Goldilocks 🥣). Our brains LOVE it.

Why’s that then?
Our brains have become very good at detecting patterns. We can learn from patterns and the minimum number of elements that you need to create one is… you’ve guessed it. THREE.

Two feels incomplete, four feels too much, but three? That’s the Goldilocks Zone.

Ok, but how will that help me become a better presenter?
Things that come in threes are funnier, more memorable and more impactful than any other number of things. You can use the rule of three to:

  1. Structure a presentation
    Past, Present, Future:
    This is where we were. This is where we are. This is where we are going.

  2. Create a memorable message
    Hands, face, space.
    See it, say it, sort it.
    Reduce, reuse, recycle.

  3. Give your words more weight
    "Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered."
    Barack Obama’s inaugural speech as President.

Anything else to add?
One last thing. Incorporating that number into your presentations will give you a competitive advantage. Why? Because most people don’t.
