The Backstory: A non-cringe way to promote your next podcast

Funny, isn’t it... how it can be more nerve-wracking speaking in front of people you know than complete strangers.

Funny, isn’t it…

How it can be more nerve-wracking speaking in front of people you know than complete strangers.

A couple of months back, I was invited on the Behind the SME Podcast.

Now I’ve known the host, Adam since day 1 of our professional careers. We both started out in the world of door to door charity fundraising.

I’m sharing this, because…

Use the ’backstory’ to spotlight the thing you need to promote.

So why was I nervous?

Well, what ever ‘it’ is, Adam’s got it.

As the charity fundraising agency grew, we would run sales schools together and I used to watch him give talks to our 250 fundraisers in awe.

While I was struggling to get my coaching business off the ground, Adam had started two businesses which have gone on to be exceptionally successful, Kene Partners, an R and D tax credits business and OPUS, a wonderful community for entrepreneurs, of which I am a member.

I’d by lying if I said I hadn’t felt a pang of comparison from time to time, especially given we’re friends outside of the working world.

So if that entices you to have a watch or a listen, please do 🙂.

Reflecting back on the interview itself, there were three things that stood out to me in particular:

  1. Adam had done his research 🕵️‍♂️
He’d read my articles, stalked my LinkedIn, listed to some other episodes. One could argue this goes without saying, but the truth is that is a rarity outside of the super established shows.

  2. His questions were challenging 🧠

He didn’t just take what I say a face value, it dug below the surface - which makes for a far more interesting conversation.

‘So why do you think that is?’
    ‘What do you think about…’
‘Surely there’s a danger it could go stale, right?’

  3. He asked for coaching live 🎤

Mid-interview, he turned the tables and said, “Help me find my message.” It takes guts to do that - and made for one of the most memorable moments of the conversation.

Unsurprisingly, I’ve had a number of people message me about this part in the show.

I hope you found our backstory interesting and it sparks an idea for how you might promote your next podcast episode).

P.s. Found this article useful? It would mean the world if you’d give us a one-liner testimonial.

Inside MicDrop, we help our members use podcasts as a growth lever to amplify their ideas and build their personal brands. I personally recommended 4 members off the back of my appearance with Adam.

If having that kind of support would be useful, we’ll be opening our doors to new members again in October.
