🪤 The Subtle Difference between Thought Leadership and Self-Promotion...

...that most people get completely wrong.

This week, I’m sending an email every day to keep you updated on MicDrop’s launch. If you’d rather not receive these updates you can opt out by clicking here.

Normal service (a tip every Monday) will resume next Monday at 12:47pm.

When I started MicDrop, I was very intentional about making sure the term ā€˜thought leadership’ was part of our tag line.

Why?

Because it is SO easy to fall into the self-promotion trap; especially when you’re building a business.

The difference matters. A lot.

Thought leadership is idea promotion, not self-promotion.

The three most common self-promotion traps we fall into?

  1. Telling people what we've done 🄱
ā€˜I spoke at this event. I wrote this blog. I appeared on this podcast.’
    (Look at me!)

  2. Regurgitating other people’s content 🤮
ā€˜Let me tell you about The Marshmallow Test…’
    (It’s already been done)

  3. Seeking validation 🤩

    ā€˜Thrilled to announce I am a LinkedIn Top Voice/Forbes 30 Under 30…!’
(Great - but what do you think?!)

If, like me, you've fallen into any of these content traps, you're not alone.

Here’s the shift…

  1. Instead of sharing what you’ve done; share what you’ve learned šŸŽ.
'Speaking on this panel has profoundly changed the way I think about...'

  2. Instead of regurgitating other people’s content, contribute to it 🧠
'The Marshmallow Test has been completely misinterpreted...'

  3. Instead of seeking validation, share the messy middle 🤫
'I made the Forbes 30 Under 30, but the truth is...'

Thought leadership is at the heart of everything we do inside MicDrop.

For us, its about challenging the status quo in our respective fields in order to create positive change.

It’s not about chasing the spotlight, it’s about saying something that matters - and saying it in a way people can’t ignore.

The best bit? When you get this right, it becomes magnetic.

The right people lean in.
Opportunities start to come to you.
And you stop having to prove your value - because your ideas do it for you.

The response to MicDrop’s launch has been incredible. There’s still time, but not much…

5 invitations went out yesterday.
2 more spaces already gone.

I’ve added 2 more call slots for this afternoon - click here to grab one.
